KUCHING, Nov 24 (Bernama) — Malaysia’s furniture export which rose to RM8 billion in value last year has indicated a positive trend this year as well with its exports amounting to RM5.6 billion as of September.
Deputy International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Jacob Dungau Sangan said the country’s furniture export was expected to continue to rise amid the high demand in the international market including from European countries, US, Africa and the Middle East.
“I am very confident that the furniture industry will be one industry with the potential to continue to contribute to the country’s income growth,” he said when officiating the closing ceremony for a seminar here today on the development of entrepreneurs in the Sarawak furniture industry.
Sarawak which has the largest timber industry in the country, should take the opportunity to exploit the resources available as the state’s contribution to the furniture industry remains small, the deputy minister said.
He said the state should also take the initiative to mobilise its rich natural resources for downstream activities as well.
